So we told you to go vote for Matt Breida to be the Fedex player of the week and you didn’t vote http://www.authenticssanfrancisco49ers.com/cheap-kyle-juszczyk-jersey , because the San Francisco 49ers running back has won the award of cheesy sponsorships. What does he get for this? Not much. What do we get? A chance to watch his awesome touchdown run again. We’re almost a week removed from 49ers-Lions but this run still hasn’t gotten old. The 49ers were high on Breida coming out of college at Georgia Southern and for a UDFA, he has been nothing short of impressive. It’s a shame we won’t see what it would have been with him and Jerick McKinnon on the field but I’m already salivating for 2019. It remains a mystery what kind of work Breida will get when the 49ers go up against the Kansas City Chiefs. On Friday, Kyle Shanahan talked about dividing up carries and whether they want to reward Breida’s high average with more carries, or if the high average is benefited by his current workload.Breida had one fewer carries than Alfred Morris in Week 1, and three fewer in Week 2. Time of possession will be critical against the Chiefs explosive offense http://www.authenticssanfrancisco49ers.com/cheap-earl-mitchell-jersey , so regardless of who gets more carries, it should be a busy day for both running backs. In some way, shape, or form, the 49ers will need a cornerback in the offseason. Maybe not one to become a starter http://www.authenticssanfrancisco49ers.com/cheap-joe-staley-jersey , but one to push their homegrown developmental prospects for a starting position. Ahkello Witherspoon had his moments, but he also didn’t really have anyone to compete with for 2018 starting spotand that may have contributed to his less than stellar season. Richard Sherman has one side locked up, that much we do know. The 49ers have Witherspoon and Tarvarius Moore pushing each other and then K’Waun Williams holding down the nickel corner spot. The 49ers secondary had issues in 2018, but they also have invested a lot of picks into the cornerback position. Spending a boatload of money on a new one may not be the smartest of decisions when you consider the draft picks used, but maybe they can get someone. So the free agent market has some names. The first one to come up is Jimmie Ward. You know him—he plays for the 49ers. Well http://www.authenticssanfrancisco49ers.com/cheap-marquise-goodwin-jersey , his contract is up and it’s anyone’s guess if the 49ers will re-up. Given his injury history and the fact he began 2018 as a glorified backup, I think Ward is gone, but maybe they can work something out. The benefits of Ward are his familiarity with Saleh’s system. The problem is, he just can’t stay healthy. Ward also could be listed with the safeties, but the original idea at the start of 2018 was for him to go in at nickel corner. Next up is Steven Nelson from the Kansas City Chiefs. He played 98.8 percent of their defensive snaps last year—so the guy has durability. He also had a solid 2018 season with four interceptions and 58 solo tackles. He also was the most targeted player in the NFLlast season which could help when teams lay off of Richard Sherman this year. The only issue really with Nelson is that before 2018 Youth Brock Coyle Jersey , his stats weren’t near as great and he could drop off after this season. The guy will also cost a lot of money to come to San Francisco. The big name in free agency for cornerbacks is Ronald Darby with the Philadelphia Eagles. His ACL tear in 2018 may make him more affordable, but the bad part of that he had an ACL tear. Cornerback is one of the worst positions to have the injury and it may hinder his speed when he returns. That injury aside, Darby is considered the top cornerback addition in several free agent listsThere’s a lot of names here to consider, but the last one I’ll bring up in particular is Morris Claiborne. Claiborne isn’t a splash signing per-say, but the 49ers could do a lot worse. Given the talent the 49ers have White Mike McGlinchey Jersey , he could add excellent depth and also light a fire under the younger cornerbacks in a fight for playing time. The question will be how much he costs. Claiborne isn’t great, but he isn’t awful either and several teams may nab him for a starting role. Here’s the list of the free agent cornerbacks per Over the Cap. Things could change with franchise tags and deals, but all of the below have contracts expiring. The San Francisco 49ers secondary has some question marks http://www.49erscheapstore.com/marquise-goodwin-jersey-cheap , and while we don’t have final answers, defensive coordinator Robert Saleh offered up some insight into the team’s approach.Strong safety Jaquiski Tartt has been dealing with a shoulder injury that limited him in practice last week. He aggravated the injury in the fourth quarter against the Lions, and is now missing practice in advance of the Chiefs game. He sat out Wednesday practice, and his status is uncertain for Sunday. Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh said Antone Exum, Tyvis Powell, and D.J. Reed are all getting work at strong safety. If Tartt cannot go on Sunday, I could see the team releasing linebacker Terence Garvin to promote Powell from the practice squad.Cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon is dealing with an ankle injury Youth Mike Person Jersey , and was listed as limited on Wednesday. Saleh would not commit to him being in the starting lineup on Sunday, but that could have as much to do with the ankle as with his struggles last week against Detroit. Richard Sherman hopes Witherspoon gets back into the starting lineup, but how he responds in practice will impact things. The San Francisco 49ers released their final injury report for Week 9, and some big names will not be playing. The team formally ruled out safeties Jaquiski Tartt (shoulder) and Antone Exum (concussion), and also linebacker Reuben Foster (hamstring). As expected, quarterback C.J. Beathard is listed as questionable and the team will decide on Thursday if he can play. The absence of Tartt and Exum means Tyvis Powell is likely starting at strong safety, next to free safety Jimmie Ward. The team is expected to activate rookie Marcell Harris from the NFI list to provide depth at strong safety. Robert Saleh said Powell would get another opportunity to prove himself if Tartt could not play Youth Adrian Colbert Jersey , but we’ll see on Thursday who of Powell or Harris gets the nod.The absence of Foster means the team is likely activating Dekoda Watson from injured reserve. Malcolm Smith has been playing SAM linebacker, but will move to Foster’s WILL spot. Watson is primarily a SAM guy, so he can slot right back into a role that is fairly limited given the 49ers extensive use of nickel.Head coach Kyle Shanahan said that if the game was Wednesday, Beathard would not have been able to play. However, the more rest he gets, the better his chances of playing. He has struggled gripping a football, so if he can grip and throw on Thursday http://www.49erscheapstore.com/joe-staley-jersey-cheap , he will play. If he cannot, Nick Mullens will get the start. The 49ers are dealing with banged up running backs as well. Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert are both questionable with ankle injuries. Earlier on Wednesday, Shanahan said that Breida did not have any setbacks against the Cardinals and expects him to play vs. the Raiders. Mostert is banged up as well, but again, it sounds like he’ll play. Shanahan said, “he’s not as healthy, but our guys will be ready for this game.”49ers final injury reportOut: S Antone Exum (concussion) http://www.the49ersfootballauthentic.com/k_waun-williams-jersey-authentic , LB Reuben Foster (hamstring), S Jaquiski Tartt (shoulder)Questionable: QB C.J. Giants Cheap Sterling Shepard Jersey , they’ve gotten a break with some of the quarterbacks they’ve had to face. They got the likes of Nick Mullens, Chase Daniel, and Mark Sanchez. Even Carson Wentz was proven to not be healthy when he played. Whatever your opinion of Marcus Mariota is, he’s probably still the best quarterback the Giants have faced in a while. The Titans also present a mystery of what team will show up, especially on offense. Per Football Outsiders, Tennessee ranks 27th in offensive variance, meaning there’s little consistency to the Titans’ production from week-to-week.Numbers that matterCan the turnovers continue?Over the past few weeks, the Giants’ defense has taken advantage of forcing turnovers. Since the Giants’ bye, they are tied for third among NFL teams with 12 turnovers forced. Only the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints have more. Over the first eight weeks of the season, the Giants only had nine turnovers forced. Obviously Cheap Saquon Barkley Jersey , this has helped both the offense and defense score points during the second half of the season. But it’s also not a sustainable way to play defense. While the Giants rank third this season in interceptions per drive on defense, they also rank just 20th in yards allowed per drive and 24th in points allowed per drive. That suggests when the Giants aren’t taking the ball away, the opposing offense isn’t having a tough time moving the ball down the field.Tennessee quarterback Marcus Mariota can miss some throws and be forced into interceptions. His 2.7 interception rate is tied for the ninth-highest among 32 qualified quarterbacks this season. As a team, the Titans are 16th in interceptions thrown per drive. The task is not going to be as easy as forcing Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jameis Winston, or Mark Sanchez into a mistake.Corey Davis is No. 84 and a No. 1Per Next Gen Stats, Davis is sixth in the league among wide receivers in the percentage of his team’s targeted air yards at 37.05 percent. This year he hasn’t been great on intermediate routes, but he’s won a high number of his deep targets with a better catch rate than expected per airyards.comJanoris Jenkins has played better over the past few weeks, but overall still ranks 68th of 72 qualified cornerbacks in success rate per Sports Info Solutions charting from Football Outsiders. He’s only slightly better — 57th — in yards allowed per pass.Davis has the ability to line up anywhere on the field, is a smooth route runner who sets up breaks well Cheap Odell Beckham Jr Jersey , and is quick enough to take advantage of cuts and double moves. Watch what he does to Stephon Gilmore — third in success rate, fifth in yards allowed per pass — after Davis motioned to a trips bunch and set up the corner with a stutter step. Gilmore was even called for pass interference on the play.Getting pressureThrough Week 14, the Titans have allowed the fifth-lowest rate of pressure in the league. But now tackle Jack Conklin is on injured reserve and tackle Taylor Lewan has been limited in practice during the week. That could set up the Giants to continue the stretch of defensive pressure they’ve put up over the past few weeks. After one sack in his first six games of the season, Oliver Vernon has 3.5 in the past two weeks. It was a matter of time before the sacks started coming and a short-handed Tennessee offensive line could allow that hot streak to continue. Per Football Outsiders, Vernon leads the team in pressure by a significant margin. His 20.5 are well ahead of Kareem Martin’s 15.0 and Lorenzo Carter’s 11.0.Taming the tight endsThe Titans typically love to use the tight end. Per Sharp Football Stats, Tennessee has the third-highest rate of plays (31 percent) in 12 personnel, which is one running back and two tight ends. They run 62 percent of the time from that personnel grouping. All that made sense with Delanie Walker and Jonnu Smith, but Walker has been out for most of the season and Smith was just placed on injured reserve. With the injuries, the Titans could see a switch in philosophy, which could help them out in the run game. Despite the heavy running from 12 personnel http://www.giantscheapshops.com/cheap-authentic-patrick-omameh-jersey , the Titans only have a 41 percent success rate on the ground. Out of 11 personnel (three wide receivers), Tennessee has a 48 percent success rate running the ball. That’s the opposite trend with passing, though. The Titans have a 41 percent success rate throwing from 11 personnel and 58 percent success rate from 12 personnel and they pass more often with three receivers on the field — 66 percent.Tennessee’s top tight ends right now are Luke Stocker and Anthony Firkser. The Titans could try to run more out of 11 personnel with Corey Davis, Taywan Taylor, and Tajae Sharpe on the field, which could lead to more success on the ground and gives the Titans better options through the air.Giants roster moves: TE Garrett Dickerson added, Kaelin Clay waived With tight end Evan Engram sidelined for the next few weeks due to an MCL sprain suffered Sunday against the Houston Texans, the Giants on Tuesday moved to add an additional tight end to their roster.Garrett Dickerson, an undrafted free agent from Northwestern, has been signed to thye 53-man roster from the Giants’ practice squad. Kick returner Kaelin Clay was waived/injured with an ankle injury to make room.Dickerson Aldrick Rosas Jersey , 6-foot-2 and 244 pounds, played in 49 games at Northwestern and caught 87 passes for 887 yards and nine touchdowns. As a senior in 2017, he played in 13 games and was selected honorable mention All-Big Ten after recording career highs in receptions (37) and yards (401).Clay was awarded off waivers to the Giants on Sept. 2, one day after he was released by the Buffalo Bills. He played in the season’s first two games, and returned five punts for 15 yards. Clay injured his ankle at Dallas on Sept. 16. He was inactive Sunday against the Houston Texans as Stacy Coley made his Giants debut returning kicks.
New York Giants T-Shirt , with a trio of games for us to enjoy. And as we get closer to the college football playoffs, the games get bigger, and we get more and more potential draft prospects to watch. All three games today are worth mentioning, and each of them have prospects who could interest the New York Giants — both on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. So without further ado, let’s get to it!Music City Bowl - Auburn vs. Purdue ESPN - 1:30 p.m.Our first game of the afternoon sees the Auburn Tigers take on the Purdue Boilermakers. This game could wind up being an important one for Auburn quarterback Jarrett Stidham. Stidham came in to the season with high expectations after a good 2017 campaign, but he never really took the next step as a quarterback this season. He has the physical tools you want to see from a “dual threat” quarterback. He can make plays with his legs as well as his arm, but he will need a good performance against a solid and experienced Purdue squad — as well as throughout Senior Bowl week — to convince the NFL to take a chance on him early. Players to watch AuburnJarrett Stidham (QB)Darius Slayton (WR)Derrick Brown (IDL)PurdueMarkus Bailey (LB) Camping World Bowl - (20) Syracuse vs. (16) West Virginia ESPN - 5:15 p.m.Our second game of the day features a pair of ranked opponents, but it does not feature the player the Giants really want to see. West Virginia QB Will Grier has elected to skip the bowl game in advance of his upcoming trip to the Senior Bowl and months of draft prep. It is a decision which was controversial a couple years ago, but is becoming more and more common place. But even without Grier, this game could be a fun one. West Virginia specializes in offensive track meets, while Syracuse QB Eric Dungey is the Orange’s all-time leader in 300-yard games. He could intrigue NFL scouts as well, with a prototypical frame and a penchant for making plays with his arm and legs. However, health has been an issue for him and will be a red flag throughout the draft process.Players to watchSyracuseEric Dungey (QB)Cody Conway (OT)WVUYodney Cajuste (OT)David Sills V (WR)Alamo Bowl - (24) Iowa State vs. (13) Washington StateESPN - 9 p.m. Our final game of the season features another pair of ranked teams, but this time neither of whom got much press throughout the season. If the Giants hadn’t just drafted Saquon Barkley New York Giants Hats , I would point out Iowa State’s David Montgomery as one of the best RBs that nobody is talking about. But even so, give Montgomery a watch — his balance through contact is impressive and he could wind up being the “sleeper” who everyone is talking about in a month or two. Iowa State receiver Hakeem Butler is also worth a watch for those hoping that the Giants will draft a big-bodied receiver. Butler is listed at roughly 6’6”, 225 pounds, and his catch radius is absolutely massive. He has the ability to bully college DBs with his size and should be a threat down the field (22.1 yards per catch) and in the red zone (9 touchdowns) in the NFL.Players to watchIowa StateDavid Montgomery (RB)Hakeem Butler (WR)JaQuan Bailey (EDGE)Washington StateAndre Dillard (OT)Jalen Thompson (S) Monday night marked the second time this season, the New York Giants came away with a win. It ended up as a wild one decided by a couple breaks and a last-minute drive. The end result was a 27-23 win over the San Francisco 49ers and a mostly positive performance for the Giants out of the bye to kick off the second half of the season. These are some of the most important plays of the game by Win Probability Added (WPA) and Expected Points Added (EPA), per data provided by nflscrapR. Explainers here (WPA) and here (EPA).Both WPA and EPA presented from the perspective of the offense.4:12 remaining, first quarter - Forcing a mistakeEPA: minus-2.99 | WPA: minus-7.0 percentDuring San Francisco’s win against the Oakland Raiders last Thursday, head coach Kyle Shanahan helped Nick Mullens by scheming up wide open throws. Per Next Gen Stats, Mullens threw no passes into tight coverage (defined as fewer than one yard of separation) against the Raiders. That wasn’t the case against the Giants. Mullens only threw 7.7 percent of his passes into tight coverage on Monday night, but that was enough to force some mistakes. With good protection but nowhere to throw the ball, Mullens fired a long strike towards the sideline to Kendrick Bourne. But Janoris Jenkins was able to break on the ball and tipped it in the air for a B.J. Goodson interception deep in San Francisco territory.2:48 remaining, first quarter - Odell all aloneEPA: 3.4 | WPA: 10.6 percentThree plays later, the Giants faced a third-and-8 from the San Francisco 10-yard line. The Giants came out in a 3x1 look with Evan Engram isolated to the right and Bennie Fowler, Odell Beckham New York Giants Hoodie , and Sterling Shepard to the trips side on the left. As the middle receiver in the trips, Beckham was able to sneak past the 49ers’ zone coverage and settle down in the back of the end zone for an easy touchdown and a 7-3 lead. The key to this play was a stunt picked up by right guard Jamon Brown, who made his first start for the Giants. Defensive end Cassius Marsh (54) made a late move and Brown was able to pick it up in front of Eli Manning as the quarterback got the ball away.14:06 remaining, third quarter - Picking on OgletreeEPA: 2.4 | WPA: 8.4 percentIn the first half, the San Francisco 49ers picked on Landon Collins in man coverage, mostly against tight end George Kittle. But the focus of the second half was Alec Ogletree. On San Francisco’s first drive of the second half, the Niners faced a third-and-5 from their 45. San Francisco used motion to bring George Kittle into the backfield and that showed linebacker Tae Davis would follow in coverage, which left Ogletree on Matt Brieda. Brieda ran an angle route out of the backfield and got inside Ogletree for a gain of 19.8:15 remaining, third quarter - Still picking on OgletreeEPA: 3.44 | WPA: 10.0 percentThe drive ended with another play designed to pick on Ogletree in coverage. On a third-and-8 from the Giants’ 11, San Francisco rushed out of the huddle and had a four-man bunch to the right of the formation. At the snap, Brieda ran a crossing route that forced Ogletree to run through traffic across the field. He never came close. Wide receiver Marquise Goodwin was the only receiver lined up to the left of the formation and he was inline like a tight end. He ran a drag to the right, which carried Janoris Jenkins enough to create more space for Brieda on the left. This play was a master class in pacing and spacing. It gave the 49ers a 20-10 lead right out of halftime.6:40 remaining, third quarter - Beckham againEPA: 3.62 | WPA: 12.3 percentBut the Giants would answer on the following drive. After a 51-yard kick return from Corey Coleman and a 30-yard pass to Beckham on first down, the Giants were set up pretty well. A t3-yard run from Saquon Barkley set up a second-and-7 from the San Francisco 20. The Giants lined up Odell Beckham wide to the left Customized New York Giants Jerseys , away from Richard Sherman. They sent Beckham on a go route to the end zone and the pass from Eli Manning was just a touch too far. Beckham got a hand on it because he’s Odell Beckham, but that wasn’t enough to bring it in.The Giants decided to run the same play on third down. Beckham again got past cornerback Akhello Witherspoon and the pass was in a much better spot — easily caught by Beckham for the touchdown.0:50 remaining, third quarter - Third down ---> First downEPA: 3.13 | WPA: 11.4 percentLate in the third quarter, the 49ers had a third-and-4 from their own 31. That really didn’t bother San Francisco because they had no problem converting on third down Monday night — they finished 8-for-13 (61.5 percent). The 49ers motioned into a 3x1 set with a bunch to the right and Goodwin on the left. The Giants rushed just three and dropped eight into coverage. The rush brought no pressure and Mullens was able to wait for Goodwin to break open in the middle of the field despite the increased number of defenders in coverage. The play was made worse after the tackle from Ogletree was flagged for unnecessary roughness, which tacked on another 15 yards. 15:00 remaining, fourth quarter - Goodson, good timingEPA: minus-5.58 | WPA: minus-15.7 percentTwo plays later San Francisco faced a 1st and 18 from the Giants’ 31, thanks to a Weston Richburg holding penalty. Mullens, with some pressure from Dalvin Tomlinson in his face, had Goodwin open on a crossing route, but threw the pass a little behind the receiver. The ball bounced up off Goodwin’s hands and into the arms of a waiting B.J. Goodson for his second interception of the night.2:43 remaining, fourth quarter - Engram emergesEPA: 2.21 | WPA: 15.4 percentThe Giants didn’t take advantage of the interception but still had a chance to win the game at the end of the fourth quarter. At the start of the Giants’ drive, they had a 35.5 percent chance to win. After an incompletion on first down, the Giants broke glass in case of an emergency and sent Evan Engram on a route down the field. Engram gave a quick hesitation three yards down the field www.authenticsnewyorkgiants.com , which allowed him to get past the defense and down the sideline for a gain of 31 yards. Engram had five targets in the game and four of them came on this drive.1:35 remaining, fourth quarter - Barkley breaks freeEPA: 1.19 | WPA: 12.4 percentAfter a few more plays and a couple penalties, the Giants faced a second-and-10 from the San Francisco 35. The Giants came out with a spread 3x1 set with Odell Beckham on the left, the same side as Saquon Barkley in the backfield. At the snap, Barkley ran an angle route out of the backfield and two 49ers — defensive end Cassius Marsh (54) and linebacker Malcolm Smith (51) — go to cover the running back. But there’s a miscommunication somewhere and both players go to the outside, which let Barkley break to the middle of the field and run after the catch. The play went for 23 yards and got the Giants down to the 12-yard line.0:57 remaining, fourth quarter - Shep outEPA: 3.18 | WPA: 26.6 percentA 9-yard pass to Evan Engram set up a second-and-1 from the 3-yard line. The Giants came out in a 2x2 look with Fowler and Shepard to the left, Beckham wide to the right, and Engram standing up, but tight on the right side of the line. At the snap, Shepard ran a quick out and beat rookie defensive back D.J. Reed, who never had a chance. Barkley picked up a blitz and Manning was able to float a pass to the open space for Shepard to bring the ball down in bounds for what would be the game-winning touchdown.
OffenseReggie Corbin Womens Mason Foster Jersey , RBSchool: Illinois | Conference: BIG 10College Experience: Junior | Age: 21?Height / Weight: 5-10 / 200 lbsIf any of you follow area high school football you may recognize Corbin’s name. Corbin is a native of Prince George’s county Maryland and played high school football at Gonzaga in downtown D.C. before he landed at Illinois. Corbin wasn’t highly recruited I think he may have only been a 1 or 2 star prospect but he is making the most out of his opportunities this season at Illinois. Last season he didn’t see many carries last season and took the offseason to get in better shape. This season Corbin is the workhorse for the Illini and is a top 5 rusher in the BIG 10 in rushing yards. Corbin primarily rushes out of the shotgun but he uses his vision, agility, and speed to take advantage of the zone run scheme he plays in. Illinois has had some prolific runner’s in their history but Corbin is on pace to land a spot in their single season top 10 rushing list. He finished this matchup against Rutgers with 11 carries for 137 yards and a touchdown. Gardner Minshew, QBSchool: Washington State | Conference: PAC 12College Experience: RS Senior | Age: 23?Height / Weight: 6-2 / 220 lbsMinshew started his collegiate football career at East Carolina. He was given a red shirt during that time and also graduated so now he is playing as a graduate transfer at Washington State. It’s going pretty well for him. Minshew is playing really well in Washington State’s air raid offense and he’s on his way to putting up career best numbers. Who knows what NFL future Minshew might have the transition for his predecessors from college to the pro’s hasn't been a smooth one. In the meantime he is one of the most prolific passers in the PAC 12 and that was on display this weekend as he lit up Oregon State going 30/40 for 430 yards and 5 TDs. If Minshew continues to play this way he will definitely catch the eye scouts and start receiving a lot more buzz. Dexter Williams, RBSchool: Notre Dame | Conference: IndependentsCollege Experience: Senior | Age: 22?Height / Weight: 5-11 / 215 lbsAt Notre Dame just because you begin the season as a starter doesn’t mean your job is safe. We have seen it with Ian Book replacing Brandon Wimbush and we can see it again with Dexter Williams replacing Tony Jones Jr. Williams along with book as provided a spark to the Notre Dame offense transforming it to one of the more prolific offenses in the FBS. Williams talents were on display this past weekend against Virginia Tech. Williams dismantled the Tech defense and ripped off several huge runs that helped propel the Irish to a win. Williamshas legit speed and vision and once he gets into the open field he is hard to stop. Williams ran for 178 yards on 17 carries for 2 TDs this past weekend. In just two starts he has 339 yards on 39 carries and 4 TDs. Steven Montez, QBSchool: Colorado | Conference: PAC 12College Experience: RS Junior | Age: 22?Height / Weight: 6-5 / 235 lbsRight now Montez is one of the most underrated QBs in college football. Montez got the keys to the Colorado offense last season and the growth from that year to this year is obvious. Montez leads a 5-0 Colorado team that is ranked 18th in total offense in the NCAA. A large part of that is how prolific Montez has been this year. What is most impressive about Montez’s growth is not his yardage, attempts, or touchdowns it is his accuracy. He is averaging a 75% completion rate for the season so far if he can keep up that kind of pace you’ll start hearing more about him by November. Montez picked apart Central Michigans offense this past weekend going 24/33 for 328 yards and 2 touchdowns. Special emphasis not necessarily on the numbers but on when and where he placed the ball. I’m liking him more each week.DefenseHasan Defense, CBSchool: Kansas | Conference: BIG 12College Experience: RS Junior | Age: 21?Height / Weight: 5-11 / 187 lbsKansas lost but Hasan Defense picked off one of college football’s best quarterbacks not once but twice. The picks themselves are dope but what is even most impressive and encouraging about Defense as an NFL prospect is his ability to bait a quarterback and his instinct and ability to break on the ball at the last moment and convert those opportunities to touchdowns. In a conference often criticized for its defense there are few defensive players in the BIG 12 that could pull their weight in other p5 conferences. I think Defense is one of those guys. Plus, his name, its obvious. He finished this game with 7 tackles 1 pass defended and 2 interceptions. Jachai Polite Womens Morgan Moses Jersey , EDGESchool: Florida | Conference: SECCollege Experience: Junior | Age: 20?Height / Weight: 6-2 / 242 lbsFlorida is 5-0 and has looked pretty good in all their games. They are a real dark horse to make waves in the SEC. A huge part of that has been Florida’s defense a lot of the players are don’t have enough experience to be draft eligible but the Gator defensive unit is clicking as well as any other top defense in the country right now. A standout star in the making on that defense is Jachai Polite. He has already caught the eye of #drafttwitter and well as real NFL scouts. Perhaps aside from the question of length Polite has all the other coveted skills of an EDGE rusher. He is quick and fast and can make a tackle look silly. He can pursue and shut off running lanes. He can get to the QB and bend the edge to make the sack in just one fluid movement. Florida upset LSU this weekend in large part to Polite’s presence on defense. He finished this game with 6 tackles (2 for loss), 2 sacks, a forced fumble, and a pass defended. Brian Burns, EDGESchool: Florida State | Conference: ACCCollege Experience: Junior | Age: 21?Height / Weight: 6-5 / 235 lbsThere isn’t much to be happy about if you’re a Florida State fan but there is no question that you can have pride in your best player Brian Burns who is also one of the best edge rushers in the country. Burns nearly destroyed the Miami offense and nearly broke my heart this weekend. Burns got after new starter N’Kosi Perry often and made a fool of the offensive line. Burns has the length so coveted by NFL teams off the edge and is relentless in his pass rush. Burns doesn’t just have potential he is so far above so many EDGE prospects already. He has a ridiculous swat, dip, and swim move that he uses to quickly beat protection and get after the QB. He’ll likely be a 1st round pick coming from a bad team. He finished this game with 4 tackles (3 for loss), 2 sacks, 1 pass defended, and 2 forced fumbles. Montez Sweat, EDGESchool: Mississippi State | Conference: SECCollege Experience: Senior | Age: 22?Height / Weight: 6-6 / 245 lbsIf it hasn’t clicked already there are some very good edge rushers potentially in this year’s class. One player that will be entering for sure is Montez Sweat. I don’t know what it is about Mississippi State Edge rushers but I have been in love since Preston Smith. Athletically Sweat is what some Redskins fan’s wish Smith was. Both players will be compared for obvious reasons but I think Sweat is more dangerous coming off the edge (I really like Smith BTW). Sweat has built an impressive resume at Miss State already. He is one of the nation’s sack leaders (8) and is almost past his career best he set last year (10.5) in just 6 games. The same goes for his TFL numbers this season (10.5) compared to last year (15.5). He is on his way to setting personal bests. Put simply he lives in the backfield and can take over games. His did just that against Auburn this past weekend. Sweat finished that game with 3 tackles (all 3 for loss) Womens Deshazor Everett Jersey , 3 sacks, and one forced fumble. Jeffery Simmons, DLSchool: Mississippi State | Conference: SECCollege Experience: Junior | Age: 21Height / Weight: 6-4 / 300 lbsProjected Draft Status: 1st RoundNFL Comparison: Chris JonesCollege StatisticsPlayer OverviewJeffery Simmons was a 5-star recruit from Macon, Mississippi who made his rounds by visiting the campuses of Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi State as he sifted through his scholarship offers before deciding to commit to the latter. Simmons nearly put his football future in jeopardy before his freshman season even got started. Simmons was found guilty of simple assault and malicious mischief after video surfaced of him repeatedly striking a woman allegedly because she has been making disparaging remarks about a deceased family member. Simmons was ordered to pay for the woman’s medical bills and damages to her car as a result of the assault. Mississippi State disciplined him too. They suspended Simmons for one game against South Alabama his freshman season. Mississippi State received a large amount of criticism for their decision to allow Simmons to enroll in the first place and in their decision in punishment that some consider a slap on the wrist. Simmons will have to explain his actions many times over the next few months. On the football field their is no question that Simmons is one of the top defensive linemen in all of college football. He is quick, powerful, relentless, and already a technician when it comes to getting off blocks and into the backfield. Simmons might not have the sack numbers some are looking for at the position but what doesn’t show up on the stat sheet is how he is able to take on double teams, reroute running plays, and just be disruptive in the backfield. Any team looking for a day one starter on their defensive line will likely be considering Simmons. He is a top 20 talent the question is if his past will cause him to drop as the NFL somewhat attempts to look concerned about violence against women. StrengthsGood size with long arms. He plays with good strength Cheap Alex Smith Jersey , power, arm extension, overall technique etc. He is hard to move from his assignment and has ability to collapse middle of the pocket.Scheme versatile he’ll be able to play DE in a 3-4 (5-T) or DT in a 4-3 (3-T). Quickness off the snap is evident. Very good at splitting lineman and working inside. Uses his initial quickness to exploit the gap and knife into the backfield.Has an already established counter with a nice arm over move that gets offensive linemen off balance where he can take advantage of their inside shoulder. Commands double teams, chips, etc - focused attention on him allows his teammates get the stat glory. He ruins the offenses party. He has at least 30 TFLs over the course of two seasons which is pretty rare for an interior DL. WeaknessesPast off the field issues. Lots of questions about how he has grown how his new future circumstance will affect him. Needs to develop a secondary move to discard those linemen with more consistency on each snap. Has a tendency to just try and win with his upper body he needs to get his lower half involved to win momentum battles. Offers much more as a pass rusher than as a run defender. Saw several times against Alabama, Florida, Kentucky etc where he was unable to move well enough to close on the rushing lane and the back went right past him.Let’s see his work:More Jeffery Simmons videosHow He Would Fit On The RedskinsThe Redskins have already decided that talent trumps character even if by accident unless you are critical of the team itself. Some teams will red flag Simmons because of his off field issue but I would place the Redskins firmly in the column of ‘would draft’. The Redskins made an investment in the 1st round last year and improved the NT position with the selection of Daron Payne. They double dipped at the position and selected Tim Settle in the later rounds as well. If the Redskins really wanted to to take the defensive line to another level and embrace the defensive philosophy of pure dominance on the DL they could look to select another defensive lineman this year and the 1st round will be full of them. If the Redskins stick with the 3-4 (of course they will) Simmons would be a DE. They have their starters in Jon Allen and Matt Ioannidis but they have to make decisions on Stacy McGee and Caleb Brantley. As many of you may know I personally thought the decision to sign McGee was just another failure of the franchise. McGee has done close to nothing since arriving in Washington all the while making starter cash. I won’t spend much time on him other than to say that he should be cut so the Redskins can save 2.27M in 2019 and consider it a blessing that it only costs 2.4M against the cap. Simmons can fill that spot and I’m pretty sure he would be much more effective at it. The Redskins ran into a problem down the stretch with injuries and fatigue on the defensive line. For the record I don’t think it makes much sense to spend a 1st on DL if the Redskins are sticking with a 3-4. It would only make sense to me to spend the 1st pick on the position if the FO has already decided that they will not be paying Matt Ioannidis which I will not put past them OR if they are going to move toward more of a hybrid front. So under that premise I think Simmons would be a fine fit in the Redskins scheme. He offers great power and pass rushing ability and should be able to shine in a 3-4 or 4-3. He would offer quality whenever the team needs to sub out Allen or Ioannidis and keep those guys fresh and hopefully healthy down the stretch. I would certainly sub him in on certain passing downs. He obviously also has a future as a starter. He really is disruptive and would build upon what the Redskins have been trying to do with their front for years: win at the point of attack and stop the play before it begins. Youth Jon Bostic Jersey , but if you think the news surrounding the black-and-gold is over — think again. For the drama-filled Steelers, things are just heating up, and this is where the daily links article comes in. You might have missed some key news, and we fill you in and give you the latest, and sometimes greatest, news surrounding the Steelers.Today in the Black-and-gold links article we take a look at whether or not Keith Butler, the hot seat defensive coordinator, is the actual problem with the Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense.Let’s get to the news:Ron Cook: Keith Butler isn’t the problem for the Steelers defenseBy: Ron Cook, Pittsburgh Post-GazetteThere is outrage in the city. Why is Keith Butler still the Steelers defensive coordinator? Why wasn’t Gregg Williams hired after his successful run in Cleveland? Wouldn’t anybody else be better? Now the team is thinking about adding to Butler’s responsibilities by having him coach the outside linebackers? What’s going on at 3400 South Water Street? Are they out of their minds? The anger is palpable.I’m sorry.I can’t get worked up about it.The problem for the Steelers defense this season wasn’t Butler or bad coaching. It was too many mediocre players.Butler is a good coach and has been for a long time in the NFL. I’m glad Art Rooney II and Mike Tomlin haven’t given in to outside pressure and made him a scapegoat for the Steelers’ lost season.I just wish Tomlin would allow Butler to run the defense without so much interference.Being involved in the game plan is one thing. That’s a must for any head coach.Correcting calls that he doesn’t like during a game is another thing. But taking over the play-calling, which I believe Tomlin frequently does, is too much. It’s hard to blame Butler exclusively when things don’t go well.It should be noted things didn’t turn sour for the Steelers defense with the promotion of Butler from linebackers coach after the 2014 season. It was fading fast before him under Hall of Famer Dick LeBeau.I didn’t blame LeBeau at the time. It’s not like he suddenly took stupid pills. It wasn’t his fault that players such as Troy Polamalu and Ike Taylor got old.But I’m not going to put all the blame on Butler now. It’s certainly not his fault that Ryan Shazier was injured in Cincinnati in December, 2017. I also don’t think it’s his fault that Artie Burns, Bud Dupree and Jon Bostic – among others – weren’t good enough this season.(To read more, click the link in the headline above...)Tight games were the NFL norm in 2018. Just ask the Steelers.By: Ray Fittipaldo, Pittsburgh Post-GazetteThe eight teams that participated in the first round of the NFL playoffs put the wild in wild-card weekend. Three of the four games were decided by seven points or fewer with two that came down to the wire. The Eagles won by one point, the Cowboys by two and the Chargers by six.The finishes that had fans on the edge of their seats mirrored a regular season with more close games than any other season in NFL history.鈥?Seventy-three games were decided by three points or fewer, the most in a season in league history.鈥?Nearly half of the games in 2018 were decided by seven points or fewer. There is more parity in the NFL than almost any time in history.Anyone who watched the Steelers play this season can attest. Twelve of their 16 games were decided by seven points or fewer. People remember champions who played with the Steelers. They don’t remember guys with a lot of yards and a lot of catches. They remember guys who won championships: i.e., Hines Ward, John Stallworth, Lynn Swann 鈥?”Those are the words of a Steelers superstar seeking his first Super Bowl championship, spoken just after being named first-team All-Pro on the eve of the AFC playoffs two years ago by Antonio Brown. To borrow a phrase from Brown, actions speak louder than words.“What he’s chasing is a little bit of football immortality. His legacy and those things are always evolving in championships and championship play.”Those are the words of Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, who won a Super Bowl before the arrival of Antonio Brown. It appears the Steelers will have to win another without Brown, who went AWOL the week of the season finale and is more likely to be traded this offseason than to ever wear a Steelers uniform again.“When you get a chance to play in the playoffs, that’s Steelers football Youth Alejandro Villanueva Jersey ,and every wide receiver that has put on that Steelers jersey and made a name for themselves 鈥?did it big in playoff time. That’s what Antonio Brown is looking for, that moment to put his place up as a Steeler great in the playoffs who performs and helps his team get an opportunity to play in a Super Bowl.”Those are the words of Santonio Holmes. Like Swann and Ward before him, Holmes is a Super Bowl MVP who will be remembered for making the greatest catch in Steelers history and arguably the greatest play in Super Bowl history.Brown and Holmes have an interesting connection in team history. The Steelers traded Santonio Holmes to the New York Jets in April 2010 for a fifth-round pick, then dealt that pick to the Arizona Cardinals for cornerback Bryant McFadden and a sixth-rounder, which they used to draft Brown.Holmes was coming off his best season, with 79 catches for 1,248 yards and five touchdowns, when the Steelers traded him just a year after his tiptoe touchdown catch against the Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII. Holmes was facing a lawsuit for a nightclub incident in Florida, was accused of telling a fan to “kill urself” on Twitter — to which he claimed his account was hacked — and a four-game suspension for violating the league’s drug policy.Brown also is facing a Florida lawsuit, made national headlines with his “trade me” tweet and for a speeding ticket where he was clocked driving more than 100 mph. Yet, in what could be his final game with the Steelers, Brown had 14 catches for 185 yards and two touchdowns against the New Orleans Saints.Even so, they lost the game and missed the playoffs.“Anytime you’re a part of the Steelers organization, you understand that it’s about being a champion. It’s a championship culture, a championship-type atmosphere, a championship team. All you’ve got to do is walk in here on the second floor and you see those guys’ legacy on the wall and you see what it’s about. So being a part of it, me being here for a long time Womens Artie Burns Jersey , I’m excited to have the opportunity of 鈥?that experience of hoisting a Lombardi.”Those are the words of Brown, who isn’t just a guy with a lot of yards (11,207) and a lot of catches (837) but one who performed in the playoffs. He had 51 catches for 837 yards and four touchdowns in six postseason starts but will be remembered for not winning a Super Bowl with the Steelers.Somewhere along the way, he lost sight of the Lombardi.Brown also will be remembered for his locker-room live stream video, for his social-media meltdowns, for being benched for the Bengals game that had playoff implications, for missing meetings and mocking Tomlin with James Harrison and, now, smoking cigars with Chad Ochocinco. But that’s all a sideshow to a career that saw him speed to receiving records, make memorable game-winning catches and shoot to NFL superstardom.(To read more, click the link in the headline above...)Steelers’ Week 3 win over Buccaneers stems the tide of early season turbulence If you’re anything like me, I’ll bet you’re glad you don’t have to talk yourself into believing the Steelers could still be true contenders with a record of 0-2-1 to start the 2018 campaign. And that’s what we would have had to do, you know. Talk ourselves into thinking the low percentage of teams that made the playoffs after going winless through the first three weeks didn’t pertain to the squad we cheered for. Thankfully, the Steelers rescued us from that illogical bit of fan reasoning with a 30-27 victory over the Buccaneers on Monday Night Football. It wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t always sound. But it gave the Steelers (and their fans) a chance to breathe, to sort of hit the reset button. After 2017, a season in which the Steelers seemed to be in the news every single week for one controversy or another, it didn’t seem like Team Turmoil could possibly be more chaotic in 2018. Yet Cheap Cameron Heyward Jersey , the first two weeks felt like 20, as Pittsburgh got off to an 0-1-1 start and didn’t look very pretty during the process. The ugliness wasn’t contained to the field either. But it’s okay...for now. The win over Tampa Bay didn’t cure all that ailed the Steelers going into Monday night. No, it just leveled off the airline after a rough takeoff and some scary turbulence. The Steelers still have much work to do, and how they go about their business during the next few weeks will likely determine the ultimate course of their season. However, this is nothing new in the NFL, especially with the way free-agency alters every team’s roster during the offseason—even the really talented ones. Take a look at the Steelers, for instance, a team that went 13-3 in 2017. They essentially have two new starting safeties, along with a rookie safety who they’ve quickly thrown into the mix and are expecting big things from. They also have a new inside linebacker and two outside linebackers that have switched sides. And that’s just the defense. Pittsburgh has a new starting running back to start the season in James Conner, something nobody — including the front-office and coaching staff — could have predicted as recently as a month ago. The Steelers also have a new-look receiving corps that includes a rookie and a return-specialist who they traded for right before the start of the season.Oh yes, and there’s the new offensive coordinator. With the way all teams — not just the Steelers — prepare for the regular season by protecting their essential players during the preseason, it’s no wonder ugliness is so often a part of September football. No, not all teams are looking ugly right now. The Chiefs are a great example, as they’ve started out 3-0 and couldn’t look more dominant. The other day, as Kansas City’s first half score of 35-7 over the 49ers flashed on my television screen, I thought, “Man Youth Artie Burns Jersey , the Steelers are not even in the Chiefs’ universe, let alone league.” But then I caught myself and realized there are teams like the Chiefs each and every September. In fact, the Chiefs were that team last year, as they jumped out to a 5-0 start and beat up on the Super Bowl champion Patriots in the process. Kansas City was the new team-to-beat in the AFC. Kansas City was going to get over the hump and get to the Super Bowl. By the playoffs, Kansas City was the fourth seed and lost to the Titans at home in the first round. Coaches like to tell you about how they don’t worry about what other teams are doing. “We can’t worry about what takes place in other stadiums,” Mike Tomlin is fond of saying. While that’s not always true, it’s certainly true at this time of year. It doesn’t matter who looks dominant now. What matters is who’s peaking in December and January, something the Steelers have been very good at in recent years. After all the chaos, after all those penalties, after all those turnovers given up by the offense and big plays given up by the defense, the Steelers are 1-1-1.That record looks ridiculous, but it’s only a half a game worse than Pittsburgh’s record last year at this time. The Steelers don’t look like Super Bowl contenders right now, but that doesn’t mean they’re not.Let’s see how they chart their course from here. Custom Chicago Bears Jerseys
Jaguars was meant to a rematch of two Super Bowl contenders in primetime Youth T. J. Watt Jersey , and while the Steelers have done their part this season, their opponent looks nothing like the team who beat them twice in 2017. Losers of their last five in a row, Jacksonville has been so disappointing the game has been flexed out of primetime and at 3-6, the Jaguars are almost certain to miss the playoffs this year. However, if the bookmakers have lost faith in the Jaguars, it is not showing in the betting after Pittsburgh opened as just 3.5 point favorites. If you think that line seems rather low, you are not the only one, and the early action has already moved the spread to 5.5 points. It would not be a surprise if this line was closer to 7 points by Sunday. An early totals position of 47.5 points looks much more realistic, and there has been no change to this line as of Tuesday. From an initial price of -213, the moneyline has shorten to a best price of -235 and it should be expected that this number will continued to fall as the week progresses. Jacksonville leads the all-time series with a 14-11 record dating back to 1995 and Mike Tomlin is 3-4 against them, a record that includes two playoff defeats. Prior to 2017 Youth Terrell Edmunds Jersey , Pittsburgh had won their last three in a row versus the Jaguars and they are 4-1 in their last five trips to Jacksonville.Steelers’ devolution continues at home in 26-14 loss to Ravens As the final seconds ticked down on the game clock in a silent and largely emptied Heinz Field on Sunday night, Steelers Nation worldwide received the unhappy message that last Monday’s near collapse during the second half in Tampa hardly had been any fluke, but a precursor of more serious problems in store for the Black-and-gold. After staging another second-quarter rally which knotted the game 14-14 at halftime and raised fans’ hopes for an important victory over their divisional arch-rivals, the much-hyped Steelers’ offense once again went completely dormant for the entire second half — allowing the Baltimore Ravens to snatch a surprisingly easy 26-14 victory. But if not for a couple of Baltimore errors, this game easily could have been over by halftime. In the first quarter, Joe Flacco overthrew a wide-open Michael Crabtree on a play that should have been a certain TD — which would have made the score 21-0. Then, in the second quarter, with the Ravens knocking on the door for another TD, Alex Collins coughed up the ball at the 2-yard line after a hit by Sean Davis, and the fumble was recovered by Terrell Edmunds. Had the Ravens also converted these scoring opportunities, instead of a tie at halftime Youth Maurkice Pouncey Jersey , the score would have been 28-14 in Baltimore’s favor. Thus, even during the brief portion of the game when the Steelers appeared to be competitive, that appearance was deceiving. For as much as the Steelers’ offense challenged the Ravens after returning to the field following halftime, they might just as well have gone home for the evening. During the third quarter, the offense stalled three consecutive times and had to punt the ball back to Baltimore. Then, early in the fourth quarter, the offense stalled yet again, punting the ball back to the Ravens with 10:17 remaining in the game. At that point, Baltimore simply rammed the ball down the defense’s throats, killing nearly seven minutes on the clock and culminating in a Justin Tucker field goal that extended Baltimore’s lead to 23-14. With time elapsing on the Steelers’ next-to-last possession, Ben Roethlisberger’s late throw across the middle — providing a room-service interception for Anthony Levine Sr. — somehow served as the fitting exclamation point for this defeat which likely will go down as one of the most disappointing in the franchise’s history. After passing for 224 yards in the first half T. J. Watt Jersey , Roethlisberger finished the game with only 274 yards passing, along with an anemic 5.8-yard average per pass. Furthermore, Flacco out-dueled Ben in quarterback rating to the tune of 109.5 to 72.5. In fact, throughout much of the second half, Ben hardly seemed to be on the same page as his receivers — throwing the ball too high, too low or behind them.First-quarter report cardAfter having their hopes raised by halftime — then cruelly shattered as the final quarter wore on — the chorus of boos the Steelers received from their departing home crowd was well-deserved. Viewed as a whole, it’s reasonable to say the Steelers ought to be given a failing grade after Week 4. Their offense only showed up for about one out of four quarters on Sunday night — hardly adequate to win any games in the NFL these days, regardless of opponent. And perhaps surprisingly, this defeat cannot be laid at the feet of the defense, because the Ravens were limited to four field goals during the second half. Had the Steelers’ offense performed anywhere close to the lofty preseason expectations of their fans, the Black-and-gold should have been able to score in the 30s and win the game. But alas Authentic Chukwuma Okorafor Jersey , the Steelers’ offense virtually (and inexplicably) disappeared for the entire, final 30 minutes of play. With four games and the first quarter of the 2018 regular season in the books, it’s difficult to avoid the conclusion that the Steelers truly are a team in trouble. Although tight end Vance McDonald continued to show that he’s a valuable weapon (provided he’s able to stay healthy), Roethlisberger seems to be out of sync with most of his receivers. For much of the game, Ben seemed never to quite be sure exactly where his receivers were going on the field or how they’d run their routes. It’s also painfully obvious that Ben hasn’t had enough experience in game situations working with players such as James Washington and Ryan Switzer. These players still haven’t been fully integrated into the offense.Realistically, though, we cannot expect much from an offense that produces only 19 rushing yards in an entire game, plus a 5.8-yards-per-catch average. And given the tendency of the Steelers’ offense to utterly disappear for substantial portions of games, how can we have any confidence at this point in the Black-and-gold as a playoff or Super Bowl contender? With Week 4 in the books now, it’s no longer premature to make judgments about where the Pittsburgh Steelers stand in their 2018 quest. Based on what we’ve witnessed so far, the Steelers are a team which http://www.authenticspittsburghsteelers.com/cheap-alejandro-villanueva-jersey , despite having a roster chock full ofathletic ability, cannot seem to forge this talent into a cohesive whole. And it seems the longer Pittsburgh remains a perennial playoff contender — but without claiming another championship — the farther away the team slides from that goal. With one quarter of the season finished, Pittsburgh has only a single victory — against a Buccaneers team that was flattened 48-10 by the Chicago Bears on Sunday. In Weeks 5 and 6, the Steelers will first face an Atlanta Falcons team smarting from its last-minute defeat at the hands of the Cincinnati Bengals — followed by a trip to Cincinnati to take on Andy Dalton and Company. If the Steelers’ current devolution continues, and if things don’t markedly improve on both sides of the ball, it’s certainly not beyond the realm of possibility that this team might be sitting at 1-4-1 by the time Week 7 rolls around. Have them sit a whole season? When it comes to developing young quarterbacks in the NFL, it all depends on who you talk to.Some teams think it's best to throw rookie QBs into the fire to learn on the job. Others prefer to gradually work them into the offense. Some say it's more beneficial to have them grab a cap and clipboard and take it all in from the sideline. "I think every position is the same," Jets offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates said. "If someone can't handle it mentally, then you don't want to put them on the field, because naturally they'll play slower and be thinking instead of reacting."Sam Darnold clearly passed that test for New York, and the No. 3 overall pick in April was under center to start the season."If a player shows the athletic ability, the talent and has the mental capacity to handle a gameplan and go into a game and be successful," Bates said, "then he's ready to play."That doesn't mean things have necessarily gone smoothly for the former USC star. Darnold's 14 interceptions lead the league and have contributed to the Jets' 3-6 start. So have his 55.0 percent completion rate and 68.3 quarterback rating, which also rank among the worst in the league.Still, some point to these early struggles as crucial building blocks for the future."I'm going to continue to learn," Darnold said Sunday after a 13-6 loss at Miami in which he threw four INTs. "There's always lessons to be learned."Of the 32 quarterbacks currently listed as starters for their teams, 12 were under center in Week 1 of their first season. On the flipside, some veteran superstar QBs waited a while before they got their chances.Aaron Rodgers was stuck behind Brett Favre in Green Bay before finally starting in his fourth season. Philip Rivers didn't start with the Chargers until his third year, when Drew Brees went to New Orleans. Even Brees didn't get his first NFL start until his second season.Tom Brady, Eli Manning, Ben Roethlisberger and Alex Smith weren't Day 1 starters, either."In an ideal world, it gets to be like Drew, who had a chance to watch a little, or Tom Brady and Aaron," said former quarterback Rich Gannon, the 2002 NFL MVP and now an analyst for CBS Sports and SiriusXM NFL Radio.Patrick Mahomes sat behind Smith in Kansas City until Week 17 as a rookie last year, and now is a leading MVP candidate as one of the NFL's top gunslinger s with a league-leading 29 TD passes for the 8-1 Chiefs."We knew that Patrick was very talented, but any time that an NFL team goes with a young quarterback Harrison Phillips Jerseys 2019 , usually it's a very challenging endeavor," Chiefs owner Clark Hunt said. "Sometimes it takes time, several years, but as we've seen, Andy (Reid) had Patrick ready to go Week 1."Gannon thinks the Chiefs provide the perfect blueprint."Mahomes had a chance to watch a master of his domain for a year," he said. "Alex Smith knew that system inside and out, has great huddle command and leadership skills. Maybe he doesn't throw it like Mahomes does, but this is a guy who was willing to share and help him for that year, and we're seeing the fruits of it now."That's the best situation you can have."Again, that depends on who you ask.In the past three drafts, 11 quarterbacks were taken in the first round — including Darnold, Cleveland's Baker Mayfield, Buffalo's Josh Allen, Arizona's Josh Rosen and Baltimore's Lamar Jackson this year.Jackson is the only one to not yet start at least one game. Baltimore has Joe Flacco leading the huddle, but Jackson has still been used in the offense and is the Ravens‘ second-leading rusher. The Browns wanted to have Mayfield, the No. 1 overall pick this year, sit and learn behind Tyrod Taylor. But like most plans in Cleveland, it backfired.Taylor got hurt in Week 3 and Mayfield was thrust into the lineup, helping the Browns rally to beat the Jets in a nationally televised game and end a 19-game winless streak. Mayfield has shown poise and promise, but lacks playmakers and is dealing with a coaching change after Hue Jackson was fired. In Buffalo, the Bills weren't anticipating Allen starting in the second week. They were taking what coach Sean McDermott called a "calculated" approach. But after AJ McCarron was traded before the season opener and Nathan Peterman bombed in Week 1, McDermott was left with no choice but to turn to Allen. The rookie has been dealing with a sprained right elbow , and is uncertain to play Sunday against the Jets."When you draft a quarterback like we did, there's a part of it where you have to say, ‘Hey White Taron Johnson Jerseys , he's going to play either A, B, or C — early, middle, or late or next year.'" McDermott said. "You have to be OK with all of that."The initial plan in Arizona was to have Rosen learn behind Sam Bradford. All that changed when the veteran was ineffective and benched in favor of the No. 10 overall pick.Rosen took his lumps with some turnover-filled performances. Then, Mike McCoy was fired as the Cardinals‘ offensive coordinator and Bradford was later cut — leaving the job to Rosen."His demeanor allows him to have success," new offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich said. "Quarterbacking in this league is hard and when things go bad, this kid tends to be fine."But, some say too many adverse situations could end up having long-term deleterious effects on a young player."When you put them in before they're ready, they also get hurt: Josh Allen, Josh Rosen," Gannon said. "The speed of the game is way too fast for them. … Or they have a bad experience, like what wound up happening with (the Jets') Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith, or going back to Ryan Leaf (with the Chargers). They play right away before they are physically or mentally ready or maturity-level ready. They get benched and booed and maybe run out of town, the coach gets fired, and then the next thing, they're on their third or fourth team. They think he will be a savior and he's not ready to play."How is that being responsible from a coach and ownership standpoint? It's doing a tremendous disservice."Tampa Bay's Jameis Winston and Tennessee' Marcus Mariota started right away after being the top two picks in 2015, but the jury's still out on both. For those who preach patience, 25 of the 32 current QBs started a game at some point in their rookie season. And, several held on to the job from there.Quarterbacks such as the Rams' Jared Goff (No. 1 in 2016) and the Bears' Mitchell Trubisky (No. 2 in 2017) started and struggled as rookies, but benefited from changes in coaching staffs and philosophies and took leaps in their second seasons. So, who's right?Well, all of the above."There's certainly valuable experience when you stand and watch," McDermott said. "But we all know there's no substitute for the experience when you're actually behind the wheel. There's a lot of value to that."
